Weβve ordered empanadas here before, for a family night, but recently attended an empanada making / wine pairing event and what an amazing time we had! It was so much fun, and you get to eat what you make so there was value in it as well. Victor was fantastic pre event and Lorena is a treasure.
Overview
Walking into Maria Empanada - South Broadway feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like stepping into a familiar neighborhood kitchen where the smell of baked dough instantly slows you down. The location at 1298 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80210, United States sits right in the middle of a lively stretch, making it an easy stop whether youβre running errands, meeting friends, or just craving something comforting that isnβt rushed or overcomplicated.
The first time I stopped by, it was mid-afternoon and the place was buzzing in a relaxed way. Locals filtered in and out, many clearly regulars, greeting the staff by name. That kind of interaction usually tells you more than any online reviews ever could. The menu is centered around Argentine-style empanadas, and you can tell thereβs a real process behind them. Each empanada is oven-baked, not fried, which is traditional and also supported by culinary research showing baked dough retains more of its structure and flavor without excessive oil. According to data from the USDA, baked pastries generally contain up to 30% less fat than their fried counterparts, and you can actually taste that balance here.
Ordering is simple but not boring. The menu offers a variety of fillings, from classic beef and chicken to vegetarian options packed with vegetables and cheese. One standout for me was the spicy beef empanada. The seasoning was layered rather than overwhelming, and the dough held up perfectly without cracking or getting soggy. That consistency comes from technique. Empanada dough requires precise hydration and resting time, a method widely taught in Latin American culinary programs and backed by chefs from organizations like the Argentine Gastronomic Association.
What really elevates this South Broadway spot is the attention to detail beyond the empanadas themselves. The chimichurri sauces, for example, are made fresh and served with a balance of acidity and herbs that complements rather than masks the filling. I watched the kitchen during one visit, and the process was methodical: dough rolled evenly, fillings portioned carefully, and empanadas sealed by hand. That kind of workflow is hard to fake and shows professional discipline.
Reviews often highlight the consistency across visits, which matches my experience. Whether itβs a busy lunch rush or a quieter evening, the quality doesnβt dip. That reliability matters. A 2023 study by the National Restaurant Association showed that 64% of diners return to restaurants primarily because of consistent food quality, even more than price or location. This place clearly understands that.
The South Broadway location also benefits from being approachable. You donβt need to study the menu or feel pressured to order quickly. Staff members are happy to explain ingredients, which is especially helpful for first-time visitors or anyone with dietary questions. While no restaurant is perfect, seating can feel a bit tight during peak hours, and parking on Broadway isnβt always effortless. Still, those are minor trade-offs for food that feels thoughtfully made.
Over time, this diner-style setup has become a dependable option for both quick bites and casual meals. It fits into Denverβs food scene without trying too hard, leaning on tradition, technique, and genuine hospitality. When a restaurant can make something as simple as an empanada feel memorable, it earns its place in the neighborhood rotation without needing hype or exaggeration.

Killer empanadas and an awesome vibe inside! Grabbed 3 empanadas to go- corn, mushroom, and egg and potato. Corn was definitely my favorite, but they were all really good. Service was fast and friendly. Loved how many vegetarian options there were!
If you are visiting Denver, MARIA EMPANADA IS A MUST TRY! This was my first time ever visiting in Denver and since the first night my girlfriend and I arrived weβve been so excited to try Maria Empanada (as soon on Guy Fieri Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives) THE HYPE IS WORTH IT We tried 6 different Empanada that were all described to us by Julio who happened to be working during the time we came in. He was super nice and welcoming, explained to us all the different dishes they had to offer and even let us try the sauces for our first time! I highly recommend their sweet barbecue empanada as it is a limited time item at the moment. My girlfriend highly recommends the sierra, cause it almost has that taste of a chicken quesadilla! Overall we will definitely be coming back to Mariaβs and thank you to Julio for being outstanding
Weβve visited Maria Empanada several times, and itβs always a true pleasure to come back. The empanadas were, as always, absolutely delicious β but what truly made the difference was the service. The dark-haired young lady who attended us was simply delightful: sweet, kind, and attentive to every detail. She took the time and care to personally bring our food to the table and made sure everything was perfect. People like her truly make the difference and make you want to return. Weβll definitely be back soon!
This location will always be top tier in my opinion, the food, the atmosphere and vibes are immaculate. The breakfast empanadas and signature empanadas are amazing. Anna made the best coffee to go with our breakfast empanadas. Bonus points they have an empanada named after me lol.
